VoIP has
definitely made huge strides in the communications industry since its inception
in the mid 1990’s. There is no doubt that VoIP technology is here to stay and
that it will soon make more of an impact on the way we conduct business and
interact with friends, family and colleagues.

The
largest contributing factor to the increase in popularity of VoIP technology is
the cost factor. Compared to landline telephone calls, VoIP is the most cost
effective way of voice communication. Users can make local and international calls just by using
their PC’s and incur no costs at all. Obviously certain hardware requirements
must be met to be able to fully enjoy cost free calling, which most computers
are already equipped with or can be added without any major costs. If you have
an internet connection, a set of speakers, microphone and a sound card you are
well on your way to joining the many users who are already experiencing the
benefits of VoIP communications.

Another
great benefit and reason why VoIP technology is here to stay is that it also
allows for data transfers on the same network. This major benefit is why many
business entities have hopped on the VoIP bandwagon. Companies are using video
conferencing software’s to streamline the way they conduct business. Companies
are able to communicate and conduct board meetings locally between company
branches and between international branches and clients. This feature is why is
made possible by VoIP technology and the use of broadband connections. Without
a doubt this has dramatically reduced company communication costs, not only in
travelling costs, but pure communication costs as opposed to landline
communication costs.

Critics
have constantly posed the question of steady communication transmissions with
regards to smooth streaming capabilities. Sure, VoIP technology does have its
downsides, but this is usually due to the fact that both parties are using the
VoIP technology on different platforms. This is evident when both parties are
not using broadband connections for example, if one end point is still
connecting via modem the streaming may be less than perfect due to telephone
line and modem capabilities, and of course the cost effectiveness may be in
question due to high landline telephone rates. Whatever the critics may say
about VoIP technology the effectiveness of this form of communication can only
be gauged if all users are operating on the latest PC and communications
technologies.

Most
users of free VoIP services have become accustomed to slow streaming
capabilities and ‘lag times’ that are experienced with slow data transfers,
especially with voice streaming, but these problems can be solved by using
wireless and broadband connections, which at the end of the day will not break
the bank in terms of cost. Many VoIP providers provide packages that can
accommodate fixed monthly rates and drastically reduced costs from PC to
landline or mobile calls, making the transition from traditional landline
communications to VoIP communications a painless and cost effective transition.

Nevertheless, whatever your thoughts or
reservations are about VoIP communications, it’s a form of communication that
is constantly changing and increasing in popularity. One might surrender to the
minor faults that VoIP might have, but considering that the technology has had
a very short existence so far, we may be a little forgiving to its faults. Over
the coming years VoIP is expected to expand and reach more and more users
making it one of the fastest growing sectors in computer technology.
